  2. That's gratifying. I liked the indirection of the Texas tire iron massacre, myself. We have held our breath about this man, through his anxious labours to ingratiate himself with lunatics, war criminals, and the most corrupt and oppressive elements of our political system. What we had by ideology we now have by indifference and diffidence. Gazing upon Oakland, California (naughtily) and paraphrasing Heraclitus here, Gertrude Stein remarked, "There is no there, there." That is the kindest assessment the facts will sustain.

    What's troubling, as the Presidency of our James Buchanan shows (1857-61; he was Mr Lincoln's predecessor, Tassos), is that this is a position which will not tolerate a vacuum. It will be filled. Given the state of American politics, that is quite possibly the only worse thing that could happen.
